The main objective of this study is to examine the impact of energy consumption, separated by renewable and non-renewable energy, on the Human Development Index (HDI) in developed countries
that are members of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) during the period 2000-2020. Additionally, this study examines the impact of emission of polluting gases and economic growth on the Human Development Index (HDI). The results from using the panel autoregressive distributed lag (Panel-ARDL) technique indicate that in both the long and short term, increased pollution leads to a decrease in the HDI. According to the findings, renewable energy consumption has no significant effect on the HDI in the short term but leads to a decrease in the HDI in the long term. On the other hand, non-renewable energy consumption increases the HDI in the short term, while in the long term, non-renewable energy consumption reduces the HDI. The findings of the study indicate that the type of energy consumed and its environmental consequences, together with income levels, play distinct roles in shaping human development in OECD countries. Accordingly, simultaneous attention to the structure of energy consumption, the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions, and economic growth should be considered in policymaking aimed at enhancing human development in OECD member countries.
